A turbo mill has only one rotating member. This can be a disk fitted with paddles or a pair of disks with rectangular bars between them. It rotates within a cage that contains grids, screens, or breaker plates. These are configured to produce the desired particle size are often interchangeable. Turbo mills produce considerable airflow. as much as 1700 ft3/min (0.8m3/s); pin mill produce up to 600 ft3/min (0.28m3/s). such air volumes require exhaust filtering, such as a bag filter that discharges to the product hopper. With heat-sensitive materials, air can help keep temperatures down; solid CO2 or liquid N2 may also be used. If reactive materials are to be ground, explosion-relief doors are needed.
